I Am an Ultrarunner! Almost. Maybe. Part 1

So I am entering an ultra marathon.

You may ask why.

Because someone asked me to join them.

I am not entering the race I originally considered.  That one is just too much, too soon with too much stress associated with it.  However another running friend invited me out west to try a lower key affair.  We'll see how it goes.

The original plan was to get several more marathons in my legs before stepping up to the "big leagues".  I even toyed with the idea of an all-night run in June to test myself physically and mentally.  I figured I would not be ready to tackle an ultra before 2012, if ever.

April 16/17th 2011 is coming fast.

Running came to me as a way of finding the person I ought to be.  Running came to me as a way of exploring what I have to offer the world.  I believe "Logan" did not truly exist before the running "Logan" was borne.

This post marks the launch of a series devoted to my training and adventures in ultra running.  Should be interesting.

Will I succeed?  Will I fail?  Regardless of how I finish I will be at the starting line.  And at the moment that is all that matters.

  1. Maybe it's because I've "stepped up" and did a 50k last year, but I don't think you'll have a problem at all. I know, mental sandbagging is part of the game, but I know you can do it. You've run marathons before and even when you do poorly, you still finish. And in ultras, that's the name of the game; finishing. So think of it as a marathon with a few extra miles added on. Call them your warmup/cooldown if that helps.

And I can't wait to hear more about your ultra adventures. I want to learn more from you so I can do better myself. How's that for selfish?!

  3. You are going to do great Logan. Enjoy the training as that is the real cake. The race is just the icing.

  4. You know you can do it! And should you waver, I know at least one person who will be behind you pushing you to the start line (right, Andria?).

I swore when I started running in 2007 (nope, never ran in high school or college - at least not as a sport), I was never going to run a race. I just wanted the health benefits. Now, where did you and I meet? Yup! I am hooked and my friend Matt (of NoMeatAthlete fame) swears I will come over the ultra side eventually. We'll see!
